A lot of the interior of Alaska looks from any high point like the front lines of a massive, epic battle between huge armies of aspen and birch, and the stunted spruce evergreens that define the sub-arctic taiga biome. The massive forces collide in huge fronts that pay no attention to the terrain as they engage in the endless battle for territory. In places where they co-exist, you can usually tell who was there first, and who is obviously an enemy scout.
