River Snacks

Brown bears that are downstream of Brooks Falls on the Brooks River in Alaska reap the benefits of the more dominant bears upstream at the falls. Those dominant bears are only interested in one thing: calories. This means that when they catch a fish, they generally only eat the fattiest, most nutrient rich parts of the fish: the brain and the skin. They will delicately take a bite out of the top of the head, and then peel the skin like a banana and eat that. The rest of the fish goes downstream, providing “river snacks” for other bears, seagulls, eagles, and other animals. This bear found a freshly peeled salmon with some of the skin still intact. Bonus.
